New Hampshire Center for Comprehensive Dentistry offers endodontic treatments to help remove disease and infection from the inside chamber of your tooth and from around the tooth roots. Endodontics is the field of dentistry that focuses on treating problems in these areas so that you can preserve your teeth and avoid the need for a tooth extraction. Root canal therapy (RCT) is the most common endodontic treatment. Symptoms of an infection that may require RCT include:

  • Tooth sensitivity to temperature (cold or hot) or pressure
  • Moderate to severe pain from the tooth nerve
  • Swelling around the tooth
  • A “pimple” on the gum
  • A bad taste in your mouth

At times, no symptoms are present and the infection is found by X-ray and examination. Your dentist will discuss his or her findings and any treatment options with you during the exam.

The first thing your dentist will do during your RCT appointment is to completely numb the area. When you are comfortable, your dentist will make a little hole in your tooth to access the pulp chamber. He or she will remove all of the pulp tissue in the tooth and roots as well as any decay. A number of X-rays are taken during treatment to help your dentist during the process. The pulp chamber is irrigated to remove any remaining bacteria and, finally, the chamber will be filled with permanent filling material and cement and sealed with a temporary material. A crown will often be placed following RCT to help protect your tooth from further damage, enhance its appearance, and increase your oral function.
